Fancy an alternative to cold and wet winter training rides? Why not try cyclo-cross? Ok so it is often cold, wet and muddy but it is great fun and will help develop your bike skills and strength plus give the excuse to buy yet another bike - what more could you want?
Events are generally short duration, 45-60 minute, but the intensity of the riding is high. Courses are usually in school grounds or civic parks but the terrain can get quite technical. However, courses are generally 100% rideable unless the amount of mud determines otherwise.
There are numerous races held within a short drive of the area. The Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Association run both a traditional winter series plus an excellent summer series. For more details on the full events calendar check out British Cycling.
In addition to the usual circuit type races there are a growing number of longer Cyclo-Cross events. The original and best is still the 3 Peaks Cyclo-Cross, which is held annually in Yorkshire the last weekend in September.
